BLOG: Holiday Hits & Staff Picks

Whether the holiday season leaves you feeling like a Bleak December or left with a Joy To The World, there is a holiday anthem that will warm up the coldest of winter hearts; one thing we can count on regardless is music. We gathered the favorite holiday hits from our staff, so settle in, grab a mug of hot chocolate (or your beverage of choice), and check out what hits you need to add to your Winter playlists.

Hana Belanger: Chanukah (Shake It Off) - A Six13 Parody of Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off”

Every Jewish holiday I eagerly head to YouTube, excited to discover what YouTube acapella group, Six13, will cover next. From Bohemian Rhapsody to their most recent parody of a West Side Story medley and Passover to Purim, these six talented vocalists never miss a beat. With so many covers it starts to become harder and harder to choose a favorite, yet their 2014 parody of Shake It Off has to be the icing on the cake for me. What other parody can you find men, adult men, dancing in colorful tutus, a beautifully sung story of the history of Chanukah, and an instructional rap on how to play Dreidel? Leave it to Six13 to be creative, educational, and still have it be catchy as all hell.

Anna Oggier: “This Christmas (I’ll Burn It To The Ground)” - Set It Off

I picked this song because I really love hearing a new side to Christmas. I also love the way Cody Carson sings as if he was this kid who never got amazing presents, unlike his wealthy neighbors. Because of this, he comes up with a plan to make sure everyone has a miserable holiday.

Dakota Reverie: “The Bad List” - Z Berg and Ryan Ross

Although the song in itself is alluring and melodic when you dive into the lyrics the story the song tells is filled with chaotic passion and doomed romance. It shows that a harsh concept and dreamy holiday melody can be paired; perfectly paired in my opinion. Ryan Ross and Z Berg have such a musical connection, their voices are as if the memory is yours and playing in your movie montage. Very personal. Plus, it made the head of security (see our team page) fall asleep, so that’s good.

Rachel Caton: “Christmas Truce” - Sabaton

I am choosing “Christmas Truce” because to me it speaks about humanity and peace in a treacherous war. This is a lesson on unity that we all desperately need. Sabaton did a masterful production and their videos are like mini-movies where you have to watch them to the end of their credits. The cross at the end is at Ypres Belgium in memory of those who were part of the Truce. To learn more about the historical aspect of Christmas Truce you can check out this link here.

Andi Schuster: “Yule Shoot Your Eye Out” - Fall Out Boy

“Yule Shoot Your Eye Out” by Fall Out Boy is my favorite Christmas song. The pure emo angst would flawlessly fit into their 2003 album, Take This To Your Grave, but it’s got a Christmas/Winter spin. It’s definitely melodramatic, but I don’t like the holidays much, so this fits in with my seasonal mood a little better than a lot of other songs do.
