EP REVIEW/INTERVIEW: Telltale Tells It As It Is With New EP

Updated: Aug 6, 2023

When looking for new music, what’s the first thing you look for in an artist? Look no further because Telltale has got it. This Richmond, VA-based band recently released their second EP, “Lie Your Way Out,” featuring tracks “Out of Control!” and “Slowburn.” This EP really jumps around in terms of sound. You’ve got “Slowburn” which speaks on climate change and the impacts of waste on the environment. On the other end, “COBAIN” reflects on trying to make it in the music industry, while also shining a light on the not-so-good parts of trying to make a name for yourself.

I got the chance to ask them a few questions about the EP. Here are some of their responses:

What makes this different than any EP/album released before?

"Lie Your Way Out" really captures a lot more of our raw emotion than previous releases.

These songs are much more direct about the topics at hand. We didn’t dance around anything lyrically or musically and each track shows and communicates that. For example, Slowburn is aggressive about climate change and negative environmental impacts and “COBAIN” opens an eye to what it’s really like to be an artist chasing your dreams living in a van.

What are your musical icons and influences that made you want to jump into the music industry?

As a band, our influences vary widely and touch on all genres. We listen to and draw influence from bands and artists such as Slipknot, Nirvana, nothing, nowhere, Blink-182, Kesha, Eminem, Lil Peep, and so many more. Nothing is really off-limits in terms of what could influence a song of ours and “Lie Your Way Out” really displays that in tracks like “COBAIN” and “Out of Control!”

What’s your process when it comes to writing new music?

Our writing process really changed for “Lie Your Way Out.” We all started learning how to do some demoing in a DAW and would pass and share things around with each other. Sometimes a song would start as a bunch of synth and other virtual instruments until someone else heard the translation of how that could turn into a guitar part or drum part.

I also got the chance to ask a friend to give her thoughts on the EP as a first-time listener of telltale

“‘Pessimist’ was the first track I listened to, and I was instantly drawn in by the catchiness of the melody. The more mellow intro of the song made for a great build-up to the first verse, and it really stood out lyrically due to the creativity and relatability of the lyrics. ‘Slowburn’ was the second track I listened to, and it immediately showed me the variety within the EP. This song had a much heavier beat than pessimist which I loved, and it blew me away lyrically as they gave their perspective on the state of our environment and the impact of the media. This was a great introduction to Telltale and I can’t wait to check out more of their music”

All in all, I give this EP a solid 9|10! As much as the sound bounces around, there should be something that suits you! If you haven’t, you should give “Lie Your Way Out” or Telltale in general a listen. All of their socials (Twitter, Tiktok, Instagram, and Facebook) are @telltalerva.
