INTERVIEW: Pulling The Curtain On Perspectives

Updated: Jan 6, 2022

David Pierson is the man behind the vocals in Rochester, NY metal outfit, Perspectives. I had the pleasure of seeing them perform live last month, December 11, creating a write-up that you can read on our site, link here! Recently I had the pleasure of getting to know David a little bit better, discussing how he ended up as the vocalist of the band and more.

What got you started in music?

When I was growing up, probably around 11 years old, my friend Nick and I would jam out to Linkin Park all the time and we just really loved pretending we were on stage and doing the vocals. I was always infatuated with how Chester [Bennington] of Linkin park could scream. I wanted so badly to learn how to do it. From listening to Linkin Park, I started listening to other bands that were (at the time) ‘heavy’; like Sevendust, Limp Bizkit, Green Day, Breaking Benjamin… and from there I started listening to ‘heavier’ bands like Mudvayne, Slipknot, etc. And from there I really started to understand that being in a band is everything I wanted to do.

Who inspires your music?

Honestly, a lot of different influences have come around over the last several years. I started making my own music in my solo project called UNDEFEATED. And with that, I branched off into other genres like hip hop, r&b, dubstep, and really whatever I wanted. Obviously metal is the root of it all, but from doing all those different styles and kind of making it my own. A lot of content came out of really trying to do all these different styles but yet make it my own.

How did you end up in Perspectives?

The band ended up reaching out to me after hearing some of my music in my aforementioned project and asked if I was interested. I obviously obliged.

Any pre-show rituals you do before heading on stage?

Usually about a half-hour before I go on stage I go into an almost trance-like state where I just get myself psyched up. I close off from everything else and I just am within myself. It’s honestly an anxious half-hour, but it gets me really pumped. Like, I know I have to go up and absolutely crush it. It’s a need.

What do the perspectives fans mean to you?

It’s not fans, it’s fam. We really are building this whole thing with the intention of everyone being a family and being close together. It’s the togetherness that makes us what we are and the overwhelming support we get from everyone is so surreal. I’m so very thankful for everyone in the family and I’m excited to watch it continue to grow. We are nothing without each other. It’s really “A Place to Call Home,” and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Where can fans find your music?

Pretty much everywhere. I’ll be honest though; it’s very much in its infancy, and right now there’s so much going on behind the scenes that is so much more than what is out there right now. We’re really diving into the momentum that we have right now and the music that we’re making is gonna blow everything we have right now way out of the water. Stay tuned!

What are some of your favorite foods from all over?

I absolutely love food. My wife and I make a point of going to a new restaurant as often as possible and trying new authentic foods everywhere we go. If I had to pick [it would be] when she and I went to Hawaii in 2017. There was a restaurant that was known for their fish tacos. So we obviously ordered those and we were absolutely blown away. I’ve never had food that good before and it’s something I’ll never forget.
