SINGLE REVIEW: Tate Logan Debuts Solo Career with "Kill Me to Try"

Elle Marche

Friday, March 4th, Tate Logan, released his highly anticipated solo debut with “Kill Me to Try.” Have you ever had a dream so intense that you just had to drop everything and chase it? A dream that required putting your full focus on something new? If so, then this single will not just be relatable but will become the soundtrack for your journey. Whether chasing your dreams involves investing your paychecks into a magazine (my dream) or moving across the country to focus on your music career as Tate has done, you can find inspiration from this catchy banger with even catchier lyrics.

Lyrically speaking, I found Logan fully embodies a speech once given by Set It Off’s Cody Carson at Warped Tour. In 2016 Carson stated, “If you have that passion and you have that drive you can make your dreams a fucking reality, born none.” He focuses on this concept with the chorus “I’ll burn it all down and start with something brand new/I want something more than a stupid fucking boring life/I never found out if I could get a redo/Instead of killing time/Would it kill me to try?” It never hurts to try, especially when it comes to your passions. According to Logan himself, “It’s about being so deep in a dream that the concept of failure that may or may not come out of sight and currently irrelevant. It’s a lust so great that you’re willing to turn your life upside down for the slightest chance something incredible could happen. Sometimes packing your shit, quitting your job, and moving as far from home as possible is the only way you’ll ever truly find out.”

Instrumentally, “Kill Me to Try” has a melody impossible not to bop your head to. Driven by a classic pop-punk bass line, it becomes absolutely clear why this anthem easily gets stuck in one’s head. All you need is one listen and you’re entranced for life. Add in a slammin’ snare plus a fun easy-going guitar riff and you’ve found the recipe for pop-punk track of the year. This ceases to surprise me since this single was produced by the legendary Matt Squire, known to have worked with artists such as 3OH!3, Neck Deep, Simple Plan, and Big Time Rush. What really makes “Kill Me to Try” rise above the rest is Tate Logan’s dynamic vocal control. The smoothness is impeccable and I find myself audibly in awe every listen-through.

The music video shares a story of how easy it is to lose yourself not only in your dreams but in the moment as well. From waking up late and rushing out the door to taking detours on the way to the studio, Tate Logan shares a comedic and relatable story.
