Paramore released their first track since 2017 on September 28, "This Is Why," and we are obsessed. It seamlessly blends the retro-pop vibes of 2017’s After Laughter, the haunting sounds of 2009’s Brand New Eyes, and the fierce, personal emotions of vocalist Hayley Williams’ solo album Petals for Armor. Along with Williams, Paramore is rounded out by guitarist Taylor York and drummer Zac Farro. “This is Why” is a very guitar-driven track, which is a departure from some of Paramore’s work that focuses more on vocals. The bass track is heavy and deliberate while the drums take on a brighter tone. It calls to mind other bands in the scene who have recently shifted to groovier, 70s-inspired sounds (see: “Attention” by Emarosa and “Motown” by Grayscale). Williams’ voice is simultaneously ethereal and gritty. Overall, it feels like a natural next step in the wake of releases from both Paramore and Williams over the last six years. I’ll have it on repeat until the album drops, which is scheduled to drop on 10 February 2023.
