Meet Me @ The Altar dropped “Say It (To My Face)” on September 30, which is a vivid, unapologetic, throwback pop-punk track. A video was released along with it, and it very clearly and cleverly lines up with the song itself. The song reminds me of the pop-punk that I grew up on in the early-mid-2000s. There are some moments that reminded me of Good Charlotte, Sugarcult, Green Day, and Avril Lavigne. The outfits worn in the music video by vocalist Edith Victoria, guitarist Téa Campbell, and drummer Ada Juarez are also straight out of the early 2000s. But this song isn’t one-note, heard-it-before pop-punk; the percussion in the intro of the song shows a mastery of jazz-style drumming and the guitar lines and tones are certainly more interesting than a lot of what their peers are putting out, especially in the bridge of the song.
Lyrically, this song is a suckerpunch. Like the title indicates, “Say It (To My Face)” is about calling out internet trolls and daring them to say their bullshit to the women’s faces. The music video portrays the typical internet troll-- an aging creep spewing hate towards women on the Internet for attention. The women get revenge on him at the end of the video, which is something I think most women with any sort of internet presence have wanted to do to some creep at some point in their lives.
Overall, if you like pop-punk, you’re going to like this song. If you like Hit the Lights, Stand Atlantic, or Broadside, give Meet Me @ The Altar a shot.
